Refugees share stories and culture on World Refugee Day

MY JOURNEY, MY HOME

Diaspora Action Australia (DAA) will be hosting a major exciting event on World Refugee Day, Tuesday 20th June at Flinders Street Station concourse from 10am to 4pm, as part of The Refugee Council of Australia’s Refugee Week 2017 celebrations.

“My Journey, My Home” brings refugee and migrant communities together to showcase their cultures and traditions, and introduce the wider community to the situation in their countries of origin which led to their journies to Australia. This event highlights the contribution refugees and migrants make to Australia and to their countries of origin.

Throughout the day commuters will be enthralled as they watch Australians from Darfur, Sri Lanka, Nuba Mountains, Iraq, South Sudan, Syria and Myanmar bring their culture, traditions and stories to them through their special performances:

  • Dancing and music, from traditional to rap
  • Cultural presentations, including –
    • Coffee ceremony;
    • Pre-wedding ceremony to prevent violence against women;
  • Short films, videos and stories
  • Silent dramas and much more

Click here to view the My Journey, My Home booklet which showcases the event program and provides greater detail on each community, their culture and their work in their countries of origin.

Community members will be there on the day to speak with the audience and answer their questions.

DAA works with migrants and refugees who promote peace building, human rights, development and humanitarian response in Australia and in their countries of origin. DAA is the only organisation in Australia working in this field.

Refugee Week is Australia’s peak annual activity to raise awareness about the issues affecting refugees and celebrate the positive contributions made by refugees to Australian society.  In 2017, Refugee Week will be held from Sunday 18 June to Saturday 24 June.
